What Others Are Saying

Reflections and experiences from people who have engaged with John's teaching, writing, courses, seminars, and learning experiences.

John Scheepers is a compelling theological voice and I commend him to you without hesitation. I have known John for decades, and what sets him apart is that his thinking is never merely academic. It is rooted in deep love for God, for people, and for the Scriptures, and it is forged in the real world of communities, churches, and lived experience. He has the gift of making you think harder and feel more deeply at the same time. Whether in writing or in a room, he brings both intellectual rigour and genuine warmth, and he has a rare ability to create space for honest, stretching conversation. He has sharpened and deepened my own faith over many years, through the things we agree on and the things we don’t, and I have seen him do the same for many others.

John Scheepers is a gifted contextual theologian, missiologist, writer, teacher and communicator. As a white male, he exemplifies a posture of humility, compassion, ownership and allyship concerning his participation in the legacy of injustice, inequality and exclusion in South Africa. John is passionate about equipping church leaders with a contextual understanding of the Gospel that has profound implications for mission, liberation and transformation in South Africa.

John Scheepers is a prophet!  Who fearlessly yet lovingly confronts systemic inequality and power misuse, grounding his stance in biblical truth. He challenges institutions to uphold justice and compassion, inspiring others to envision a more equitable world. His social media presence and public engagement consistently call for social transformation, making him a respected advocate for justice that is formed biblically. A faithful student of scripture, John approaches theology with academic rigour and practical relevance. His passion lies in developing students into agents of transformation. Through intellectually deep and practically wise teaching, he nurtures not just knowledge but also character and faith of our students through mentoring and investing in students, as he helping prepares a new generation of leaders to pursue justice, love, and reconciliation at Cape Town Baptist Seminary. Leaders who will lead like Jesus, Lead for Jesus and Lead to Jesus.

Principal at Cape Town Baptist Seminary

What I deeply appreciate about John is his willingness to engage difficult questions with honesty, humility, and theological depth as a white South African; particularly around the legacies of apartheid, inequality, the role of the Church, and God’s justice in the world. More recently, I have had the privilege of working with him in curating The Warehouse Seminars, where he consistently brings thoughtful biblical reflection and a critical engagement with questions of scripture and power.

John creates spaces where honest questions can be explored with both intellectual rigour and deep faithfulness. His voice is an important gift to those seeking a faith that engages the realities of our world.
